16 Green Road is located in one of Kendal’s conservation areas and is an excellent example of how small-scale, sustainable improvements can be made to an existing building. The property, which is attached to a late 18th century house, was converted from a barn during the 19th century so it could claim to be one of the first barn conversions in the area! Kendal architects O’Neil Associates were responsible for designing and building a modern back porch and a striking bike shed that resembles a line of brightly-painted beach huts. The owners’ brief was to keep the structures as sustainable as possible, using as far as possible materials sourced from within a 50-mile radius. The integrated gardens were designed along similar lines, using in part recycled materials, by Liz Ashburn and constructed by Cedar Hill Landscape.
