The hamlet of Broad Raine lies next to Broad Raine weir on the River Lune. Originally a corn mill, miller’s cottage, barn and granary it is now 4 separate houses.
Mill Barn was converted to a delightful multi-level house a while ago but has some on-going issues with damp. The current owners have made various improvements to reduce damp and warm the house and can talk about what worked and what didn't! Measures taken include internal insulation, loft insulation, replacement windows and draught proofing. They have recently had their south (weather) wall lime rendered after removing the cement pointing. There are also extensive vegetable beds, hens and a greenhouse as part of a sustainable lifestyle.
The weir on the river is the site of a 50kW hydro-electric scheme using an Archimedes screw proposed by the Killington and District Sustainable Energy Trust. The trust is putting in applications for planning permissions and the various licences required to install the scheme. They are looking to launch a share scheme this summer.
NOTE : Please wear sensible shoes or boots as the paths can be slippery, especially down by the river.
